Science

Science is a fundamental part of our everyday lives.  It helps to explain so much of the world around us and enables advances in many areas including health, communication, the environment and leisure.  The KS3 Science curriculum allows pupils to find out more about the world around them, to develop an interest and understanding of natural phenomena and prepare them for studying Science at Key Stage 4.  Practical investigations play a significant role in how pupils learn in Science, and we aim to help pupils develop thinking skills as well as practical skills which will develop their scientific thinking, as well as supporting them in becoming inquisitive and confident learners in later years.

Our curriculum in Years 7, 8 and 9

Pupils are taught in tutor groups throughout Years 7 and 8; they are then taught in set groups in Year 9.  Throughout the three years, they are aware of the distinct sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and are able to see links between these.  We use the Activate 1 and Activate 2 textbooks.

The topics we cover over the three years include:

  • Cells, Structure and function of Body Systems
  • Reproduction
  • Particles and their Behaviour
  • Elements, Atoms and Compounds
  • Reactions
  • Acids and Alkalis
  • The Earth
  •  Forces
  • Sound, Light
  • Space

Enrichment opportunities

There is a Science club every Tuesday afternoon after school, offering a range of practical activities designed to enhance the learning and thinking offered in lessons.  Pupils are given the opportunity to attend the Big Bang event in June – an exciting day which allows pupils to see how Science impacts on our everyday lives and to see the various career opportunities available from a Science background.
