Spring Concert
Spring is definitely here – The Ashcombe School Music Department put on a vibrant Spring Concert on Tuesday 23rd April to a packed hall of music lovers. Elevated to the main Hall for the first time in years, the lighting and the backdrop did justice to the range of musical genres and talent.
The evening began with a couple of uplifting pieces from The Ashcombe Brass Ensemble, followed by a quick change of tempo with Rock Band playing Beggin’ by Maneskin. Back to calmer tunes with haunting Greensleeves from the Folk Group. Choral pieces took the concert up to the interval with The Ashcombe Singers (soloists Arthur, Riley, Stanley, and William) and then The Ashcombe Massed Choir singing May It Be arranged by Mark Brymer.
The Year 7 Wind Band had an amusing section playing Mary Had a Little Lamb and Little Bo Peep, both arranged by Matt Kingston, followed by the Community Choir and three folk ballads. Senior Singers and Junior Orchestra segued to the finale played by the Senior Orchestra – a rousing rendition of a Grease medley and The Blues Brothers Revue. Energising!
Great musicality and performances from staff and students alike – they certainly ushered in the Spring (despite the weather!). It was a fitting way to wish our Year 11 and Year 13 musicians the best of luck in their summer examinations. Thank you to the support of parents, friends of school, staff and students for supporting the evening; there was definitely a strong sense of community in Ranmore Hall. The final well done must go to all students involved as they have all worked tirelessly over the last term in rehearsals and have shown admirable commitment to the Music Department.
The Music Department, led by Mr Houlston, supports and champions a range of musical styles through the curriculum and as part of a remarkably busy extracurricular programme – engaging students from Year 7 to Year 13.
