Silver Survival - DofE Expedition
The penultimate week of the Spring term saw the Ashcombe Year 11s complete another challenging but successful DofE Silver Award qualifying expedition. The challenge of this expedition should never be underestimated, as traversing the South Downs Way this early in the year can come with a demanding variety of weather conditions and this year did not disappoint.
There was everything from fog and rain through sunshine to a second night of -2°C. Everyone rallied using a range of methods from cooking hearty meals to warm up, to amusing themselves with a variety of challenges and games. Some of the favourite meals were haggis, toasted bagels, dahl with rice and naan, and porridge with chocolate powder. Challenges such as learning Latin, composing and singing songs, one group concentrating on the whole of George Michael’s repertoire, and spotting wildlife were all popular.
There were some great presentations including photographs and songs for assessors at the end of the expedition. Our final destination at Arundel Castle saw many footsore, tired and muddy young people trudging in - but the sense of achievement was palpable. It is always impressive how cheerful the participants are at the end of such incredible effort.
The Ashcombe School has a fantastically active and energetic Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme which offers so many students the opportunity to develop skills and resilience, while having a wonderful time with peers. Thanks to all the assessors, staff and parents who make it all possible - Gold Expedition here we come!
