Sensational STEM Structures

Ranmore Hall was abuzz with the sounds of keen competition as teams from various years tackled the STEM engineering challenge on Monday 20th January.

120 Ashcombe students competed in teams of 6 students and the best from each key stage will be going on to a STEM competition to compete against other Surrey secondary schools on Thursday 27th February.

The challenge was to design, develop and test a marble run (target running time as close to 30 secs as possible), using equipment such as paper, toothpicks, masking tape, straws and paperclips.  It also had to fit within a 1m square defined area.  Not only did the marbles have to complete the course, but the design had to incorporate elements such as direction change, motion and movement through heights.

The challenge is to solve the problem using ingenuity, team work and creativity based on STEM skills. It was an enjoyable and kills enhancing morning and our winners are looking forward eagerly to the next stage.
