STEM 'Speed Dating' for Year 9
Inaugurated last year, the Year 9 STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths) ‘meet the professional’ event is now a popular date in the school calendar, providing students with an unrivalled opportunity to encounter new and different professions, skills and careers or explore an area in which they are already interested.
With over 40 organisations represented, many of them by people who are parents of Ashcombe students themselves, the hall was buzzing from the beginning. With 6-minute timed sessions before moving on to the next encounter, students were provided with some directed questions to ensure no difficult silences, but these proved unnecessary as students grew in confidence.
Businesses represented included Lloyds Banking Group, DPS Games, Mott McDonald, AtkinsRealis, ExxonMobil, Warner Bros Discovery, Balfour Beatty, KBR, Volker Fitzpatrick, Pfizer, Dolphin IT, Costain, Aon – there was something for everyone. The group photograph shows just how happy they were to be part of the event.
Interested 6th Form students were able to join the event once Year 9 had left, many of them to consolidate ideas for their futures. Thanks to the Careers Lead, Sarah Sale, and Lisa Payne from the Science department for this vibrant morning which got the STEM juices flowing. #FindYourFuture #AshcombeCareers.
