Remembrance Day at Ashcombe:
A Poignant Tribute
This year's Remembrance Day ceremony at The Ashcombe School was held on the 11th of November, which fortunately fell on a school day. Despite the weather forecast predicting rain, the skies cleared just in time for the ceremony. At 11:00 am, the rain stopped, allowing us to gather solemnly at the Memorial Gates to pay tribute to the brave individuals who have fallen in service. The temporary pause in the rain seemed like nature's own gesture of respect, providing a serene moment for us to reflect and honour their sacrifices.
Our Year 9 History students delivered powerful readings of Lawrence Binyon's poem "For The Fallen". Gen, Jack, Harvey, Kateryna, Gaia and Jasmine brought the words to life with their thoughtful and respectful renditions.
Henry Fraser from Year 13 performed The Last Post with exceptional skill, leading us into the Two Minutes Silence. The ceremony continued with Reveille, followed by the Kohima Epitaph, recited by Stuart Farquharson-Roberts, our History Teacher and Veteran.
A special moment came when David Mountain, an alumnus from the 1940s and member of The Ashcombe Dorkinians, joined Jane Collard in laying the wreath. After the formal proceedings, 6th Formers and staff gathered in the Library to share refreshments and engage in conversation with our distinguished guests.
It was a very moving tribute that connected our school community across generations, remembering and honouring those who have served.
