Physics, Climate Change - beyond Science at The Ashcombe
Science is a popular and exciting subject at The Ashcombe School and there are many opportunities for students to be inspired and explore all its facets further - the last few weeks has seen two different but equally engaging topics explored.
On Tuesday 14th May, twelve Year 12 Physics A Level students attended an Institute of Physics lecture at the University of Surrey in Guildford given by the notable Professor Jim Al-Khalili FInstP on An Exploration of Time.
Questions about the nature of time are some of the most enduring. Yet despite our ever-deepening understanding of the physical universe, we have yet to reach a consensus on the nature of time: does it flow like a river, carrying us along, or does it flow past us? What does our current understanding of the laws of physics and the nature of the universe tell us about these big questions on the nature and behaviour of time? All these ideas and others were explored and debated, and the students certainly had a stimulating evening.
Just as challenging was a lecture given at the school earlier in May to a packed Library by parent Colin Burke, Head of Model Validation for Lloyds Banking Group, about Climate Change. 120 Year 9 students listened and engaged with a topic which is of real prominence and is a huge influence on so much of what future scientists will be grappling with.
These are just a couple of the additional information and engagement events which students in all years are introduced to by the enthusiastic Science team – some of them culminating during the exam season with Biology and Chemistry breakfast revision sessions before GCSE exams – very popular and well-attended!
