News Roundup

The Ashcombe School is a busy place, and the rate at which events and activities enriching the curriculum take place means that sometimes it is impossible to give them all the attention they deserve. Back after half-term at a gallop! – music, sport, alumni, World Book Day, Charities Week - and lots more.

This will be a quick fire roundup, with fuller stories for some to follow.

Our Maths Fest trip to London on 27th February was another exciting event, with 16 of our top Year 12 mathematicians attending. Students met some YouTube-famous mathematicians and explored fascinating topics, including group theory and the Rubik’s Cube, the perfect Pac-Man strategy, and even probability in poker gambling!

A real highlight of the term was Charities Week 24th-28th February, which was brilliantly organised and hosted by members of Year 12. Traditional events such as the Lower School and Upper School Talent Shows and Teachers Got Talent were as popular as ever, while original productions of Pointless and a teachers’ edition of The Traitors added fresh excitement to the week. In total, over £2,000 was raised, which will be distributed among our school charities.

The hall was a perfect setting for the Inter-House Music Competition on 27th February with the by now always professional and exciting light and sound support provided by the IT team ad the Tech Crew of students, creating a wonderful atmosphere. With an audience of around 250 parents, students, guests and in a great show of enthusiasm, many of the students who had not got through the audition but came to cheer on their peers.

World Book Day 2025 on 6th March saw wonderful characters and costumes, the Library transformed into a Reading Cafe with book menus and a live author engaging with Year 7 and Year 8 students about the ideas and craft of writing.  Add to that an inspirational display of staff favourite books from their teenage years and you have a lively and inspiring event.
